What is a Psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a fully qualified medical doctor who has completed specialised training in mental health care. In the UK, psychiatrists must complete at least 5 years of medical school obtaining a medical degree. This is followed by at least 2 years of  general medical training including medicine, surgery and other specialities. They then complete at least 6 years of specialist psychiatric training before becoming a consultant. As medical doctors, psychiatrists are uniquely qualified to diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and understand how physical and mental health interact. They can provide comprehensive mental health assessments, develop treatment plans, offer therapeutic interventions, and work alongside other healthcare professionals to deliver complete patient care
