Porthia Clinic – Cornwall Mental Health Clinic

Combined ADHD and Autism (AuDHD) Assessment — Cornwall

ADHD and autism frequently co-occur, and the way they interact can make each condition harder to identify in isolation. A combined assessment considers both conditions together — providing a more complete and clinically accurate picture than two separate assessments conducted independently.
We are CQC-registered and follow NICE guidelines. Our assessments are thorough, unhurried, and face-to-face in Cornwall.

What is AuDHD?

AuDHD is the term increasingly used by the neurodivergent community to describe the experience of having both ADHD and autism. Many autistic adults also meet diagnostic criteria for ADHD, or have traits of ADHD and many adults with ADHD have unrecognised autistic traits.

When both conditions are present, they interact in complex ways. Assessing each in isolation can miss the full picture — or produce an incomplete diagnosis that leaves people without the support they need.

A combined assessment considers both simultaneously, using structured clinical methods, detailed developmental history, and standardised tools — producing a more accurate and complete formulation.

Who is this assessment for?

A combined ADHD and autism assessment may be right for you if:

  • You have traits of both ADHD and autism and want to understand the full picture
  • You have a previous ADHD or autism diagnosis that felt incomplete
  • You are a student in further or higher education experiencing difficulties that have not been fully explained
  • You are an adult managing unexplained difficulties with focus, organisation, sensory sensitivity, or social interaction
  • You have been told you may have one condition but suspect the other is also present
  • You want a single, thorough process rather than two separate assessments

Our service is open to adults aged 18 and over. We are particularly well placed to support those in further and higher education, where neurodiversity can affect learning, wellbeing, and daily life in distinct ways.

Private ADHD and autism assessments vary significantly in quality. Porthia is CQC-registered and follows NICE guidelines — the same clinical standards expected in NHS practice. If a diagnosis is not clinically supported, we will say so.

What is the process

Assessment
Assessment

Before your appointment, we ask you to complete detailed questionnaires about your experiences, history, and current challenges. We also ask a person who knew you well in childhood — a parent, sibling, or carer — to provide corroborative developmental information. This is a clinical requirement and is essential to a thorough assessment. The assessment is conducted face-to-face in Hayle, Cornwall (online assessments can be considered). It draws on the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised), and validated ADHD rating scales. We will explore your developmental history, current presentation, how symptoms affect your daily life, work, and relationships, and any co-occurring conditions. This is an unhurried, in-depth conversation — not a checklist.

Treatment Plan
Treatment Plan

A follow-up session to discuss findings, explain the diagnostic formulation clearly, and agree a personalised treatment plan. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss next steps. A comprehensive written report provided via your secure patient portal. This documents the full assessment, diagnostic conclusions, and recommendations. It is also sent to your GP and is suitable for use with employers, universities, and other services when requesting reasonable adjustments.

Support
Ongoing and Post-diagnostic Support

Follow-up appointments help monitor your progress and adjust treatments as needed. They are needed if we are prescribing medications for you. We maintain close communication with your GP and other healthcare providers, ensuring coordinated care while supporting your journey toward improved wellbeing. Where appropriate post-diagnostic support is available from Dr. Eleanor Ley, our Educational Psychologist — particularly relevant for adults in further or higher education. This is booked separately. See below. Learn more about Autism Post Diagnostic Services.
